Antique Pair of Wooden Prosthetic Legs with Leather Harnesses
$865.00
Both legs show heavy, honest wear throughout. Leather is dry, cracked, and softened with age, with losses, surface tearing, and separation at stress points. Hardware shows oxidation. Structurally intact as display objects, but not functional for wear.
Description
Matched right and left wooden prosthetic legs constructed from shaped hardwood with integrated leather thigh cups, lace-up closures, and original leather strapping. The legs terminate in carved foot forms with worn soles, showing clear evidence of prolonged real-world use rather than medical display. The turned and tapered shafts retain a smooth, hand-finished surface, while the leather components-stitched, riveted, and reinforced with metal stays-reflect the practical, workshop-driven approach of early American prosthetics manufacture. Found concealed within the wall of an old farmhouse in Shabbona, Illinois, the set carries a strong sense of personal history and rural improvisation, likely hidden away when no longer needed rather than discarded.
Early American prosthetic makers emerged in the mid-to-late 19th century, often operating as small regional workshops supplying veterans, industrial workers, and farmers, producing durable, custom-fitted limbs that emphasized function and repairability over uniformity.
Both legs show heavy, honest wear throughout. Leather is dry, cracked, and softened with age, with losses, surface tearing, and separation at stress points. Wood surfaces show scuffs, abrasions, and darkened patina from handling and use. Hardware shows oxidation. Structurally intact as display objects, but not functional for wear.
Each leg: 29″ H (including leather strapping)
